Irene Grant

March 14, 1926 - August 22, 2016

Irene Grant, aged 90, passed away on August 22, 2016 in Williamsburg, Virginia.  Irene was born in Whitestone, New York on March 14, 1926 to Joseph and Stella Orlowski.  She is survived by her daughter Deborah Coumbe and husband Arthur of Fort Montgomery, N.Y., daughter Pamela Spiegel of Westwood, MA, and grandsons Nathan, Andrew, and Tyler Spiegel of Charlestown, MA, Canton, MA, and Norwood, MA.  Irene was predeceased by her husband Frederick Gordon Grant of Sonoma, CA and brother William Frank Orlowski of Garden City, N.Y. Irene earned a B.A. at Hofstra College, became a secretary for Mademoiselle Magazine in New York City, and married the “King of the Campus” in 1949.  Together they revisited the WWII memorial of the 8th Air Force 3rd Division 34th Bomb Group 1943-45 at Mendlesham, East Anglia, England. They lived together in Lima, Peru, Brecksville, Ohio, and Sonoma, CA. She loved Latin dancing, musical theater, politics, and “Wits End” on Nantucket.  She was a creative person who sought things that made life pleasurable.  Her last home was Chambrel where she was a friend to all.  Everyday Irene walked many miles so it is hoped that she will continue to march, be proud, and hold the line.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Brookdale Senior Living on September 3, 2016 at 11am.  3800 Treyburn Drive, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
