Doris A. Cone, Nee Floyd/Collier

Born, May 12, 1918

Died, February 4, 2012

Doris Cone, a resident of Williamsburg, Va. since May, 1965, died on February 4th at Morningside Assisted Living Facility, where she has resided since June, 2009.

Doris was born and raised in Catonsville, MD, a suburb of Baltimore. She had three brothers and one sister who all preceded her in death. They were; Donald (Marie), Gilbert (Jo), Neil (Evelyn) and Audrey. Doris was married to Elmer (Jack) Fleming Floyd for 12 years, until his untimely death in January, 1950, at the hands of a drunken driver. Doris and Jack had 7 children together. They were; Mary (deceased, 2011), Donald (deceased, 1993), Jack, of Chicago, Doris Ann (deceased, 2005), Jim (Karen) of Michigan, Daniel, and Thomas (Calif). Doris also leaves behind a loving niece, Linda (George, deceased, 2010) from Dundalk, Md.

In 1952 Doris met and married James G. Cone (deceased, 1976) in Virginia. They lost their only child at birth. From 1952 until 1965 the couple lived in Essex, MD, a small community NE of Baltimore where Doris worked at the Martin Marietta Aerospace Co. Part of her responsibilities involved the assembly of the cockpit instrumentation panel for the Gemini Space crafts.

While residing in Williamsburg, Doris worked at the Eastern State Mental Health Facility as the manager/Instructor of the Sewing Department. This Department was instrumental in teaching residents the art of sewing and was known for creating and assembling all of the costumes and uniforms worn by the staff of Colonial Williamsburg.

Following her retirement from Eastern State in 1983, Doris kept active and very busy running her own Sewing business which provided the padding used by Department stores to fill out the mannequins shape displaying their clothing.

After selling the business, after her health began to deteriorate, Doris managed to engage in another passion of hers Öreading. Doris was a prolific reader and also enjoyed following the goings on in Washington with a keen eye for the inevitable ìHog washî as she referred to anything she disagreed withÖwhich was plenty! She was often teased about the intensity of her beliefs as she would often bang the tabletop with emphasis in making a pointÖ.much to the delight of the witnesses. To this day one can see the visible indentation in the tabletop where she sat and held sway!! One of Dorisís favorite sayings in moments of frustration, in lieu of expletives, was ìJesus, Mary and Joseph.î Now that she is in Heaven with our Savior, she will have the opportunity to meet Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, and have to explain the frequency with which she called upon them.î!!!

Doris was a warm, caring, kind hearted and personable woman of great compassion. She had that indefinable gift of making everyone she spoke with feel as though they were the only one that mattered. Her love of family was only paralleled by the pride in accomplishments achieved by her children.
